Deadbolt LockDeadbolt locks are the strongest and safest option when it comes to protecting your home because they must be activated by a key or thumb turn. This means they cannot be jimmied open using a knife or a credit card the way a spring activated lock can be.

Even alarm systems, which only alert you to an intruder entry, are not as secure an option as deadbolts, which keep your doors firmly shut. Hardware stores have a dizzying number of options when it comes to locks, however, and choosing the right one can seem like an overwhelming task. Understanding a few specifications of deadbolts, however, can help you make the right choice.

Deadbolt Quality

Though it may seem like every brand and price are of roughly the same quality, this is not true. All locks are actually graded by the American National Standards Institute and you should choose a high level grade for the best quality assurance. The grades for deadbolt locks are as follows:

  • ANSI Grade 1: The highest quality rating for use on commercial and residential locks
  • ANSI Grade 2: Highest rating for residential only locks
  • ANSI Grade 3: This is the lowest rating, meeting only the minimum requirements

Be aware that most residential locks that are installed during construction or by DIY homeowners are only ANSI Grade 3. The best option is to replace the locks on all these exterior doors with ANSI Grade 1 deadbolts.

Types of Deadbolts

There are a couple different types of deadbolts: single cylinder, double cylinder, and touchpad deadbolt locks. Single cylinder deadbolt locks are opened with a key on the exterior and with a thumb piece on the interior while double cylinder locks open with key on both the interior and exterior. Touchpad deadbolts are keyless and can be programmed with multiple codes for easy opening.

For deadbolt locks to be truly effective they should be installed on solid wood, steel, or fiberglass doors. These types of doors will resist entry since they cannot easily be battered or bored.

Hollow doors, on the other hand, are made of soft thin wood and installing a deadbolt here would compromise the security. A local locksmith can quickly and easily make sure that the deadbolt locks are installed properly and it’s the best option if you want the highest level of security.
